Can I use any other oil besides Euro Oil in the Henna?
Euro Oil is the most effective oil to use in Morrocco Method Henna. It has been said that Olive Oil works, however we have not tested it here at Morrocco Method so cannot guarantee the effectiveness and outcome of using a different oil.
How many packets of Henna do I need for my hair?
One packet of Morrocco Method Henna Hair Dye covers shoulder length hair. If your hair is longer than shoulder length, we recommend more than one packet.
What is Henna?
Henna is made from the leaves of the Lawsonia plant. It is a natural conditioner, able to dye your hair without damaging, drying, or chemically altering its structure. It is the ideal colorant. Our henna is 100% natural and free from synthetic chemicals, making it safe to use while pregnant or breast feeding. Unlike other Henna Hair Dyes, ours has no PPD, Metallic Salts, or Ammonia. Chemically-based dyes often cause split ends and lifeless hair; henna does not. Rather than chemically changing the hair structure and weakening it, henna binds with the keratin, preventing brittleness.
The henna plant, by itself, is naturally green along with the powder that is used for coloring your hair. As you mix it according to the instructions, it will produce a red dye. To achieve different shades of dye, we include a second plant, Indigo (Indigofera Tinctoria), for browns and blacks. For our blonde and neutral Henna Hair Dyes, we use another plant, Cassia, (Cassia Obovata), which by itself is colorless.
How long does Henna Hair Dye last?
Henna Hair Color is a semi-permanent dye and gradually wears off over a period of approximately 8 to 12 weeks. This time period usually coincides with new hair growth, meaning that your roots will match your henna hair color for a nice, even coat most of the time.
Which Henna Hair Color should I choose?
The color result of any henna application will be highly individualistic due to differences in base hair color, thickness and texture. An important henna dyeing tip is to always select a shade lighter than the color your are hoping to achieve, especially if you’ve never done henna before. As an example, if you wanted dark brown hair, then the best color to start with is medium brown henna. The reason for this is because you can always go darker with multiple applications; you can’t, however, go lighter.
In order to achieve the desired shade more than one application may be needed. You must wait 72 hours between each application to allow the Henna to oxidize in your hair and become it's true color.
Can MM Henna be used to lighten hair?
No, generally Henna Hair Dye will only darken hair. Henna works like layers of paint, meaning it will coat your hair's natural base color, rather than bleach it. The end result, then, is a combination of your hair's base color and the dyes color.
Natural lighteners, such as lemon juice and honey, can help lighten chemically dyed or previously henna'd hair.
Using MM Light Blonde Henna on brown or black hair may produce subtle blonde streaks but will generally have no effect.
How do I use MM Henna?
First you mix the henna, then allow it to sit for 8 to 12 hours to allow the dye time to saturate into the mixture. You may or may not add indigo powder, depending on the color. Then apply the mixture to clean, dry hair, and allow to sit for desired amount of time. Once finished, simply rinse with a little conditioner and allow the hair to dry naturally. Once henna and indigo are mixed, please use within 2 hours. Color result will not be predictable after this time. You may only keep henna and/or indigo in powder form in an air-tight container.
Using Neutral imparts no color, but overall conditioning.
The final color will represent itself within 72 hours after treatment.
One package of henna will generally cover shoulder-length hair of about medium thickness.
Why Does MM Henna come in 2 Bags?
Our different shades of MM Henna are achieved by combining two plants: Henna, which is naturally red by itself, and Indigo, a blue/black plant. By mixing these 2 plants in various ratios, different shades of hair dyes, ranging from pure red to black, can be achieved. The two bags in your MM Henna packet contain pre-portioned amounts of henna and indigo that result in the color displayed on the package. Since our henna and indigo bags are pre-portioned, no measuring is required. Simply use the entire package when mixing as per the instructions to get the intended color.
Can I create custom shades of Henna?
Creating custom shades is simply changing the ratio of Henna and Indigo. To lighten your dye and add more red tones, use more henna in the mixture. To darken your dye and add more cool tones, add more indigo. The following ratios for our MM Henna, which can be used as baselines for creating custom shades:
Red: All Henna
Light Brown: 2/3 Henna, 1/3 Indigo, or 2:1.
Medium Brown: 1/2 Henna, 1/2 Indigo, or 1:1.
Dark Brown: 1/3 Henna, 2/3 Indigo, or 1:2.
Black: One full package of Henna, One full package of Indigo.
You may mix the Light Blonde Henna Hair Dye or Neutral Henna Hair Dye to dilute the color in any of the browns, but doing so may cause a more orange result.
Please note that the results of custom Henna shades are not guaranteed. We recommend mixing Henna Hair Colors to only experienced users.
What is Amla Powder and how do I use it with my MM Henna?
Amla can be used with our Henna Hair Dyes to create cooler tones, prevent fading, enhance dye uptake, and prevent relaxed curls/waves from henna use.
Amla Powder is added directly to the henna mixture, never to the Indigo. If you were to add it directly to the Indigo it could stop dye release. When using Amla, do NOT use tea, lemon juice, or apple cider vinegar. Mix with warm water ONLY.
Amla Powder can also be added onto hair as a conditioner to add body after henna treatment. Please make sure to wait 72 hours, or 3 days, for the color to set in your hair before applying.
Can MM Henna be used to cover gray hair?
Yes! MM Henna is a great natural option for covering gray hair. Coverage is best with the Brown, Red, and Black Henna Hair Dyes. If your grey hair is very light or white, blonde may work well for you. If one application does not cover your grays, you may apply a solid red base, wait 72 hours and then apply the desired shade on top. The red base will give the Indigo a foundation to stick to and prevent it from fading. For a more detailed description of that process, see below:
Blonde: Apply the Neutral Henna Hair Dye to your hair, as per the instructions. 24 hours later you may apply the Blonde Henna Hair Dye. Sometimes more than one application is needed.
Browns: You will need to buy two packets of color: MM Red Henna Hair Dye and your desired color. Apply the Red Henna Hair Dye to your hair. This will turn all hair that is lighter more of a red/orange coloring, but is necessary. You must then wait 72 hours for the color to set, and then apply the Brown Henna Hair Dye of your choice, per the instructions.
Henna likes to stick to hair, while Indigo likes to stick to Henna. A good henna base will ensure that the indigo, (mixed in with the henna) will attach to give you a nice, overall coloring. Waiting 72 hours ensures that the red coloring will not impact the brown.
We recommend not using Euro Oil in the mixture when attempting to dye greys or white hair as this may limit the henna's attachment to the hair.
Can I remove my Henna Hair Color?
You cannot fully remove henna, but don't worry - it will fade over time. However, blonde and very light hair types might still have a dark gold tone. In the meantime, the best way to try to lift Henna color is with a homemade, overnight oil treatment.
Try Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Coconut Oil, or Argan Oil.
Start by creating the oil treatment. Mix enough oil so that you have an ample amount to cover all of your hair, with a bit left over for touch ups.
When you have the right amount, apply the oil to your hair from root to tip. When your entire head of hair is covered, we recommend that you leave the oil treatment in overnight using a protective towel to cover your pillow.
In the morning, to remove the oil treatment, first thoroughly saturate hair with an undiluted
Morrocco Method Shampoo and massage in well.
(Since oil and water do not mix, wetting your hair first would require more shampoo). Rinse. Shampoo normally.
This process will cause the color to fade. Multiple applications may be necessary. The number of applications varies from client to client depending on individual hair type, color, and length of time henna is in your hair. And for some, Henna is very sticky and will not fade well.
A note on green hair: This simply means that the indigo has not been washed out completely
Can I Use Henna with Color Treated Hair?
You may put henna on hair that has been PREVIOUSLY dyed with chemicals. Because most chemically treated dyes contain ammonia, it is very important to wait between 6 and 8 weeks to henna your hair. This is non-negotiable. If you do not wait you could end up with orange hair.
You may also chemically dye your hair AFTER you have henna'd it. You will have to wait between 6 and 8 weeks, to be safe. If you do not wait the ammonia in the chemical dyes can turn your hair green.
My hair turned orange/red; what do I do?
Henna itself is naturally red and therefore has a slight red tint under the indigo. To reduce red, use Amla Powder with your Henna. Amla will help prevent the Indigo from fading.
If your hair turned completely red/orange, it is a case of the henna sticking and not the indigo. Remember, henna by itself is a naturally red dye and requires indigo to achieve shades of brown and black.
As strange as it may sound, the best way to get rid of the orange tint is to re-apply a solid red base, and then whatever shade you are trying to achieve after. The red base will give the indigo mix something to stick to so that it does not fade out as easily.
