Inflammation and Disease-What is the Connection?
Heart disease, especially clogged arteries, was thought to be caused by too much LDL (the bad cholesterol) sticking to artery walls. Yet half of those who have a heart attack have normal cholesterol levels.
The Physician’s Health Study, which looked at 22,000 healthy men and their risk of heart disease, found that there is adirect correlation between inflammation and heart disease.
Fifty percent of those who suffer a fatal heart attack have normal cholesterol, blood pressure and blood fat levels. Women on hormone replacement therapy
You have to be particularly careful because estrogen (Premarin was used in the studies) increases inflammation in the body to dangerous levels, indicating a much higher risk of heart attack and, particularly, strokes.
Cancer
High blood levels of inflammation also indicate an increased risk of certain cancers. A study published in the Journal of the American Medical Association found that those with the highest levels of inflammation had triple the risk of developing colon cancer when compared to those with the lowest inflammation markers.
Macular Degeneration
Macular degeneration is a medical condition predominantly found in elderly adults in which the center of the inner lining of the eye, known as the macula area of the retina, suffers thinning, atrophy, and in some cases, bleeding.
Inflammation is involved in promoting macular degeneration of the eye, the leading cause of blindness in the elderly. Inflammation has been found in those who develop the most severe form of macular degeneration.
Type-2 Diabetes
Over 18 million Americans suffer from diabetes. High Interleukin –6 (IL-6) and CRP (C-Reactive Protein) are good predictors of the development of Type-2 diabetes. Those persons who had the highest levels of inflammation had more than double the risk of developing Type-2 diabetes, and those with the highest blood CRP levels had more than four times the risk of Type-2 diabetes, compared to those with low levels of these inflammatory markers.
Alzheimer’s Disease

New research shows that an overactive immune system plays a powerful role in causing central nervous system inflammation and destruction of neurons (neurons transmit and receive signals in the brain), promoting memory loss and Alzheimer’s disease.
